Homemade Rub for Ribs

I'm sure you are gearing up to either host or attend a Super Bowl party, or maybe just stay home and relax with a few apps and pizza. This year, with having our own house and a 60 inch living room tv, we decided to have some friends over to watch the big game. We wanted to make something different then just wings, dips and salsa's, but still wanted everyone to be able to pick at. Sunday we (meaning Joe) did a test recipe with a little bit of this and a little bit of that from our spice cabinet and boy was it good!

Rib Rub:

Mix together all ingredients.
1 Cup brown sugar
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp pepper
1 tbsp cayenne pepper
1 tbsp thyme
1 tbsp smoked paprika
1 tbsp chili powder

For BBQ Sauce:

Mix together extra rub with about 1/2 C red wine vinegar.

For the Ribs:

Rinse off ribs and pat dry. Bring to room temperature and rub on the rib rub. Let sit, we did ours for about 2 hours (the longer the better though). Broil at 500 degrees for 5 minutes.  Cook at 300 degrees for 1 1/2 hours.  Cover with foil and cook for another hour. Slather on BBQ sauce and cook for final 30 minutes.  For extra taste put on more sauce.

I suggest starting these ribs in the morning and have them sit. Put them in the over at the start of the game, and by half time they should be good to go!
